Ladies 5s vs Blueharts 7 - 1-1 draw
Goal scorer: Milly
Assist: Daniela
Player: Chloe
Donkey: Daniela
We had a respectable 11.30 start at home this weekend and, with no match before, a good number of the team met up early to get some extra practice in. With a previous 1-0 win against Blueharts 7s away we were hopeful we could capitalise and secure a much-needed home win.
The game started a bit scrappy with everyone wanting to get some possession of the ball, but we were able to settle down as the half progressed. The main aim this week was to communicate with each other on the pitch. We don’t have many loud players so it may not have been clear from the sidelines but there were much better connections between players this week – well done everyone.
We had some excellent chances and plenty more opportunities than we have had over the past couple of months. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to capitalise on these and went into half time 0-0.
With some positive words and a couple of suggestions of what to work on, we were ready for the second half. On the whole we were much stronger in the second half and the passing was much better. Again, we piled on the pressure and had some great through balls and breaks through the Blueharts midfield giving us further opportunities. However, we managed to fight the ball down the right and, with a ball in from the corner from Sharon to Daniela, followed by a lovely ball across the D from Daniela to Milly, we managed to slot one past the keeper. We were off!
However, despite pushing hard for that 2nd goal, some lapse of concentration meant the ball was turned over and was heading to the Blueharts goal. An unmarked player in the D sent the ball past Hannah to take us 1-1.
With only 7 minutes left of the game we weren’t able to secure another and ended with a draw. Disappointing is the word. Lots of positives to take from the game though and we head off to Letchworth next week.
Player went to Chloe for a solid game, great tackling and composed possession. Donkey went to Daniela for her dramatic slip just as she was in the D about to take a shot on goal.

*Starring role for Evans in Upminster Upset*
By Pip Evans
Spurred on by the injustice of last week’s result and a return of warmer climes, the badgers returned home to the den for their next game of the season, a traditionally feisty showdown verses ‘Us’, aka Upminster.
Luckily, the badgers had a star signing on their team sheet with the return of all-rounder Pip Evans for another week of hockey masterclass from the club legend. Evans graced her team mates with a preconceived early arrival, greeting members of the team with a fist pump and chance of an autograph for all those that made the meet on time. With such a lure of the chance to make physical contact with Evans, this ensured the majority of the team made a prompt arrival. However, those that were inexplicably delayed were subject to the new wheel of misfortune, leaving their fate in the hands of masochist captain Ellie Welsh. Fortunately for Megan Saywell, her spin saw her land on the ‘let off’ section of the wheel, having avoided the moo off, personal stick assistant or first time recital of the new hit song ‘I’m late’ (written by Captain Ellie feat ChatGPT). Charlotte Hartwig-Green’s desperate apologies for her tardiness were not even acknowledged by Captain Ellie, demanding she spin the wheel. This unlucky badger clocked the keeper of the speaker punishment, with Captain Ellie demanding Charlotte having to strap it to her back in order to carry it to and from the club since Charlotte has not got a car. Luckily for Charlotte, the latest of the late comers Megan Thomas’ spin landed on the same section, saving Charlotte from a life time of corrective back surgery.
Head of warm up Esme Willsy denied rumours of favouritism in the badger camp, despite insisting on presenting badger dog rearer of the year, Emily Wilkins, with a personalised bracelet in front of the rest of the squad. Desperate to win the admiration of young Esme, the badgers headed out for their traditional riverside preparations. Mutterings of disapproval rippled through the team as it transpired that Em Wilkins appeared late to the riverside after her newest dog Ernie got into a fight with a goose. Esme jumped to her defence, solidifying the theory that Wilkins has taken the place of Saturday father figure after the continued absence of her biological Dad Will Fradley on Saturdays.
From the whistle, the badgers heaped pressure on Upminster which the opposition found hard to cope with. Nevertheless, what really unlocked the compact Upminster defence was the dazzling distribution of the ball round the Broxbourne defence, orchestrated by star centre back Evans. This opened up the right hand side of the pitch for plenty of drives and balls into the D but the badgers struggled to take the last step of slotting the ball into the goal. The badgers won a short corner, which 3rd choice stopper Alice Brown and 2nd choice striker Em Wilkins (owing to the absence of Becky Scarrett) pulled off a surprisingly strong delivery of the ball towards the Upminster goalie. The straight strike took a deflection on the way in which was missed by the umpire, who disallowed the goal and left the badgers empty handed despite their dominance of the game so far.
The injustice of the situation spurred star player Evans to change the fate of the unlucky badgers. After a period of attacking pressure, Evans stepped up with a blazing run from defence into the opposition’s D, firing a ball across the face of goal to find Charlotte Hartwig-Green on the far post who finished off the move nicely. 1-0 badgers.
At half time, plenty of words of encouragement fired up the badgers who renewed the relentless onslaught of attacking pressure in the start of the second half. Broxbourne won several short corners but found it tricky to get through a well drilled Upminster defence, even with the well oiled Pip-slip routine. Up steps Evans, who suggested a new move; the A*-level, featuring a slip to the left castle of striker Kay Finch and then a slick pass into the D to Evans on the left hand side of the goal who neatly slotted it between the legs of the Upminster keeper.
However, the fortunes of the badgers was about to take a turn for the worse. After a lucky break, Upminster won a short corner. The shot into the D came up high off a deflection and keeper Kim Hellery dealt with the awkward position of the ball well, neatly steering to the side of the goal. Evans expertly brought the ball down and proceeded to clear the ball out the D when to her horror the umpire blew his whistle to signal a further short corner. A calm discussion followed with Evans protesting eloquently that bringing the ball down safely in the D was not a cause for a short corner, her arguments fell on deaf ears and the umpire held his decision. Upminster fired the ball into the D for a second time and despite Evans diving across the line, it hit the back board taking the score to 2-1.
The end of the game saw a turn of the tide and Broxbourne defence came under great pressure from the Upminster forwards. Evans organised the defence well and saved several shots off the line to secure the win for the badgers. A standing ovation from the crowd surely solidified Evans as player of the match and a position in the badger hall of fame of all time greats. To the dismay of Evans and in an act of betrayal not seen since Judas betrayed Christ himself, Evans’s team mates actually voted her donkey following the small issue of forgetting a towel. Player instead went to Kim Hellery for some amazing saves to keep the badgers in the game.

Badgers Beaten
Following on from a weeks rest, the men’s 1s all turned up to Badger Field in good spirits to take on a Pelicans team that’s form had dropped off since the last time the teams played.
The badgers certainly started the game more brightly than the opposition, creating nice passages of play and having the greater share of possession. However, the first goal of the game ended up going to Pelicans and Broxbourne found themselves conceding the first goal of the game again.
This didn’t dishearten the team though, who rallied quickly and found themselves an equaliser through Sam Groves who expertly dispatched his goal with what has been termed as a ‘Phil spin’ leaving the injured captain Phil Bryans in awe and with a slight tear in the eye.
Broxbourne continued with their pressure and found a second goal shortly after through Mitch Chapman who unleashed a rocket on his reverse stick into the roof of the net leaving the keeper with no chance.
Pelicans then responded with a second goal of their own, with a flick awarded and converted, making the score Desmond. A long ball was then played through for Ethan Fox to run onto who was taken out theatrically by the goalkeeper and also made sure to roll around on the floor for a bit to ensure that the keeper was also sent off and a penalty flick was awarded.
Seeing that the keeper had been sent off, a confident Mitch Chapman stepped up to take the flick thinking there was no way he could not score this time and duly dispatched past the stand in defender.
Unfortunately, the Badgers could not hold onto the lead going into half time and Pelicans managed to find an equaliser just before the break.
Despite Broxbourne playing relatively well in the first half, the same cannot be said for the second half. A great interception from Ethan Fox high up the pitch looked like it was going to lead to a 3 on 1 opportunity, but an attempted reverse stick pass across goal was quite obviously hit with the back of the stick, causing the attack to come to an abrupt end and earning Ethan the title of dick of the day.
The game became very stretched and the gaps that kept appearing between the defensive and midfield line were causing a lot of problems for the Badgers, as Pelicans quick midfield players were given far too much time to run at the defence and create chances.
Four goals came at different points during the second half from the opposition, including a second flick. Despite frustrations, the team knew at the end of play that too many mistakes were made to get anything from the game. Next week the Badgers travel to Bedford for another tough game, but knowing they will need to be better.

Broxbourne Ladies 3’s Fight Back to Claim a Thrilling 2-1 Victory Over St Albans
Broxbourne Ladies 3’s secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over St Albans 5s in a match full of incredible moments, gritty resilience, and a hard-earned comeback to avenge their earlier defeat away - it was mentioned in some detail on the podcast earlier in the season!
Playing the late slot after a great performance from the Ladies 1xi, the team definitely felt the pressure to perform well and appreciated the support.
On the sideline, the other Broxbourne Ladies, who had just finished their own matches, added to the atmosphere, cheering on with much appreciated energy. The excitement peaked for Em, when she spotted Yas on the pitch, still wearing the same Astros from her time playing in the lofty heights of the club - a fact confirmed with humor by Skippy, which only added to the fun and camaraderie of the match. A sentimental moment shared by many as the match was played.
The game started off quite intensely with both teams eager to assert their authority. Broxbourne found some great shape but with a slight change in set up, had to build the play steadily to ensure that the link ups were working. Despite a series of chances at both ends, the game remained at 0-0 for the duration of the first half and saw some great play and drives up the pitch from the badgers, who were unable to convert the chances.
This clearly frustrated the opposition, who were thwarted in all attempts until the 40th minute, when St Albans found their opening. This however in true Ladies 3xi fashion saw them fight back and dominate in the middle through some great passing and runs from Kelly, Ava, Roisin and Hannah Fixter.
5 minutes after the St Albans goal, Kelly delivered a perfect injection into the circle from a short corner, and Laura, with the precision of a sharpshooter, fired home a powerful strike that beat the St Albans goalkeeper and leveled the score 10 mins into the second half.
The second half definitely saw Broxbourne come out with renewed energy, and in the 50th minute, they took the lead. Kelly turned provider once again, this time setting up Yas, who finished with cool composure to make it 2-1.
There were some notable performances in a slightly different looking team. Ella W was on fire at top of the diamond, whilst Sharon was sunning herself in Seville and sending pictures of the beach to the team prior to the game. Ella’s determination and commitment to Broxbourne Hockey Club was so evident in the fact that she wore: borrowed size 6 astros, her sister’s shorts, an emergency pair of socks (as she could only find one blue one) and in the words of Kelly… the only things that were actually hers was her underwear. Still once a badger, always a badger.
As well as Ella, the more established members of the Ladies 3xi were on fire! Lauren, known for her fearless and fiery nature, once again proved why she’s called "team badass." After a momentary loss of composure, the now 30 year old quickly regained her focus, embodying the squad’s motto, "don’t be a dick." She then proceeded to deliver some remarkable defensive plays, including a reverse-stick ball that was so perfect it could rival the likes of Alex Danson in the 2016 Rio Olympics. The crowd was in awe of her performance, as she single-handedly thwarted St Albans' attacks on the right.
Tara (our 90 minute hero)never one to be outdone, pulled off an acrobatic double front pike somersault while defending the D—an astonishing move that left everyone in disbelief. It was a moment of pure athletic brilliance that added an unforgettable touch to the match. Admittedly, the landing was less Simone Biles and more WWE as she was then fallen on top of by another player.
Coach Matt, as always, was a bundle of nerves, watching the game unfold with his heart in his mouth. But his positivity and unwavering belief in the team were key to guiding them through the pressure. His calm demeanor and tactical guidance ensured Broxbourne stayed focused and saw out the final moments to secure the win.
In the end, Broxbourne Ladies 3’s triumphed 2-1, showcasing their trademark resilience, skill, and an unyielding determination to come back from adversity. It was a thrilling match that will go down as one of their finest performances, filled with heart, flair, and unforgettable moments.
Player of the match went to: Ella for despite wearing short shorts was wicked weaving by away from the defensive D.
Donkey to Hannah for having a momentary grumpy moment when she didn’t realise we had won the game and also for her rather ambitious deflection attempt.

Mens 3s vs Stevenage 2 - 5-2 loss
Goal scorers: Mullet & Wyatt
Assists: Ruddy & Mullet
So I have asked the question about a match report for this week, who can write one and send it... in typical fashion, we have no volunteers... so with that said, here goes by absent KP...
Brox 3s travelled to Stevenage for a lovely 10am pushback. Who doesn't love an early start at the Nobel school.
Brox conceded very quickly, 13 mins in to be precise, Thank you, Emma, for the updates on the game. 15 minutes later, whilst 3 pints being ordered, I received another message, 2-0 down!! Another goal is another chance slipping away.
Before I had time to take a subtle sip of an ice cold beer, I received another message. Brox had pulled one back.
In my head, it went like this. Brox turned over play, releasing Ruddy on the left, who inadvertently chucked a massive ariel, the Stevenage players stopping to applaud such display, to Mullet, who in recent weeks has been an engine, took the ball with a beautiful touch... turned and volleyed into the top corner, celebrating like he'd just won the lottery. Gwan Mullet!!
Stevenage, having picked up their sticks were done playing around, and 2 minutes later, scoring the scrapiest goal anyone could have witnessed. (This is pure fantasy, hockey)
Half-time whistle meant a 5 minute breather. The veteran players are trying to get everyone into the zone. This has worked so well in previous weeks.
The second half began, and Stevenage quickly out the blocks scoring. They had clearly decided a 5-1 score line was ideal. For them, it was game over.
Mullet flying high after his first half screamer had different ideas. After picking the ball from an audacious attempt to drill the ball forward. Tip toed around the pitch, ball glued to his stick, where he had time to do that we'll never know. Goal machine Wyatt had enough of him not sharing, run over with solvent to release the ball, looked at the Stevenage keeper, growled like a rabid goal machine, and took his time to convert.
The final whistle happened not long after this. Walking away with a 5-2 loss.
Nect week is the day we were meant to play West Herts, but they pulled out early.
Mom - Simon... diving, kicking, and just generally doing the goal keeper stuff.
Ladies 4s vs Bedford 6 - 3-3 draw
Goal scorers: Freya & Frankie x2
Assists: Jo x2, Aaliyah
Player: Kate
Donkey: Aaliyah, Lisa & Freya
On a sunnier morning than we have seen in quite a while, the ladies 4s arrived in Bedford, ready to give their all. Within 5 minutes, they were made aware that the match teas would be pie and mash which seemed to fuel their eagerness.
Jen arrived, explaining that she had been to Pitbull the night before feeling very jolly. A very ‘out of the loop’ Lisa asked “where’s Pitbull” which led to lots of laughter and an ultimate donkey for her.
After an inspiring talk by captain Lisa, the team took to the pitch to warm up, knowing exactly what they needed to do. The game started well, with a fairly early team goal, but ultimately put in by Frankie and the spirits of the team were lifted. Unfortunately, Bedford were relentless in their pursuit of an equaliser, which they scored about 5 minutes later. However, the Broxbourne defence of Jen, Tor, Jane and Lisa had worked out some of their attack techniques which meant that Bedford were made to try different things.
15 minutes into the first half, Bedford got a short corner from which they scored, taking them into the lead 2-1. Not long after, with more relentless attack, they scored a third. The defence had worked hard in the first half and the rest of the team had been really good in dropping back to support. Aliyah got the privilege of having a conversation with the umpire (although avoided a card) just before half time for having run into one of the Bedford players.
Going into half time at 3-1, Broxbourne heads were a little down. However, with some encouraging talks from Lisa, Tor and Lauren (a great supporter), Broxbourne were fired up and ready to score some goals. And their 2nd goal came fairly quickly. Having won a short corner, Frankie’s strike proved too much for the Bedford goalie to deal with and Broxbourne were pulling it back going to 3-2.
There was a lot of back and forth play for a while with Bedford having quite a few attempts at goal, which were saved and then dealt with by the defence, and then Broxbourne countering, with Jess and Rachael having some good connecting play and Jo having some incredible chases of through balls. With 8 minutes to go, Broxbourne won another short corner which Freya converted, taking the game to 3-3.
Bedford were determined to win, however Broxbourne were even more determined to keep them away. Then, with one minute to go, a P-flick was blown. Goalie Kate immediately appealed this, noting that there had been a Bedford foot long before any other infringement. After being shown a green card by the one umpire, the other stepped in to show him the error of his ways and this was retracted and the free hit was given to Broxbourne. Brox managed to hold off the Bedford attack and the final score was 3-3.
It was a good day out for the team and they look forward to taking on Saffron Walden at home on Saturday.
Mens 4s vs Rickmansworth 3 - 5-0 loss
Player: Ryan
Broxbourne took a squad of 15 around the M25 to Rickmansworth, to try and get some revenge for the 1-0 loss earlier in the season, however things didn’t go to plan.
Firstly, the home side were a lot younger and fitter than the previous game.
Secondly, Broxbourne just didn’t play.
Early exchanges were mostly held within the Broxbourne half, with the away side only making it into the opposition 23, on a couple of occasions, and only into the circle once. The home sides dominance of ball retention, finally paid off, when they finally converted a chance just before the interval. HT 1-0.
The second period was less than a minute old, before the home sides dominance doubled their lead from open play. A few minutes later and it was 3, again from open play.
An additional 2 goals came in the second half, and would have been more, if not for Ryan in goal. FT 5-0
A day to forget for the visitors, who didn’t get a shot on target during the game.

*A Sassy day at Stevo*
Away at Stevenage is always a tricky feat, but with a 5/3 win at home earlier in the season against the reds, and after earning 6 points back to back on a winning streak for the past two weeks, the badgers L2's arrived feeling confident, if a little too at ease.
The pregame consisted of proper girls room period chat in the changing room, and Gemma's preferences for a very hands-and-elbows on massage, no happy ending required, with added TMI about her husband's oddballs. (No, not the basketball player). The only mention of tactics from Captain Millie was the aim to score within the first ten minutes.
With new recruit Kevin on the sideline joining forces with Andy to double our boyfriends of hockey support team, it was time to play.
First half started positively with both teams settling into the game. Whilst Gemma was drafted back into defence, she still made a cameo in our attacking D, and in true stick blocking fashion won the badgers their first short corner of the game. The goal scored JUST outside the 10 minute mark felt like a good omen considering lots of the usual short corner personnel were missing (suspiciously all players with a name beginning with the letter L.. Lara, Lauren and Lisa. Will Lydia be next?). The injection went straight to the top for a strike from Vic, Ella and the Boxall sisters poised for the rebounds, it was Emily who got the assist across the D to injector Iszatt with a neat tap in behind the keeper. Footage of Lara's birthday goal last week on the @broxbourneladies2s insta was heavily studied and replicated, to put Broxbourne ahead - almost to the team talk plan!
2 minutes to the end of the first half were called, and this culminated with a wildly determined Stevenage side angling for the equaliser which after multiple short corners at the halftime whilstle, saw the backboard struck with a Stevenage goal and their audible cheer could be heard ringing into the second half.
Unsure if it was the sandy pitch, half the squad syncing with their menstrual cycle (in honour of top period research), Darcy's unusually sober/not hungover demeanour, tired legs from the Boxall's ski spree abroad, or Lydia's lashes causing extra wind resistance which made the Broxbourne side a little slower than usual on the pitch.. it ended up being the emotional tension levels running high which got the better of the top of the table defenders.
Rumour has it the umpire was just jealous of a Malaysian tan, and so, she thought she would have it out with the brownest member of the team. No, Ali had not fake tanned this week, as she has a trip abroad to see her Asian family in the pipelines. Millie also not having holidayed to the Bahamas lately was not in the firing line. In come innocent, unassuming Jess Iszatt, running with the ball to the baseline, with a Stevo player hot on her heels, only to hear the whistle blow, shockingly not in her favour as jealousy seethed from the umpires lips she claimed that the radio 1 presenter (BBC Introducing Sundays 11 til Midnight), had pushed the Stevenage player, and shielded the ball with obstruction. After a short interaction, the Broxbourne forward was subbed off, and whilst discussing with her teammates on the sideline, was shown a green card to send off the already subbed player. Vic took the hit with a 2 minute sin bin, and play resumed.
With lots to do defensively in the second half of the game, Sue, Ali, Millie, Gemma and Baz had their work cut out for them. But a huge special mention has to go to keeper Emma, stepping up whilst Lil is away, making some sensational saves and clearances throughout to keep the Brox ladies 2's competitive in the game. An incredible through ball down the centre of the pitch came from Martha who joins the 2s post injury, hoping for an assist for the all important fantasy league points, passed it to Jess on a platter for a 1 on 1 with the keeper. Redemption perhaps? After dodging it round the Stevo goalie, she was thwarted with the pressure of said redemption, the green card fiasco looming just moments before, and managed to follow through a little over enthusiastically, missing an absolute sitter just past the far post - the umpire chuckling next to her, thus securing the title of donkey for almost 2x goal scorer, Jess Iszatt.
Despite Ali's flirt tactics down the other end of the pitch, telling the squad to 'play to the whistle' whilst winking at the umps, Lydia putting her knees on the line, getting totally wiped out by a Stevenage player, it was a turnover off a sandy and slow sixteen, that meant the home team pounced for their second goal to put them ahead of the away travellers. The final whistle blowing, 2/1 to Stevenage.
Post match frustrations were squashed by jacket potato and beans or chilli on offer from the oppositions teas, including sweet treats and cookies, and a tale of our captains past about traumas surrounding sweaty cheese.
Player went to GK Emma for having a stormer in goal, and basically keeping Broxbourne in the game with some epic saves. Special mention for Gemma in defence, despite hitting it off the sideline for two free hits in a row, as this was suspected protest against playing in her defensive role.
Donkey to Jess for being passionate and not wrong. And carded.
Broxbourne Ladies 2’s meet Bishop’s Stortford L3’s back at the badger den next week.
Mens 2s vs Welwyn Garden City 1 - 3-2 loss
Goal scorers: Jack & Browny
Assists: Kav & Sully
Player: Lance
Donkey: Stu
"I can't remember the last time we won at Welwyn".... Browny's dejected mantra as we left the pitch probably summed up the way we were all feeling.
Turning up to the news that our ginger ninja Jake the Fake had suffered a limb threatening injury and had to be withdrawn at the 12th hour, the team were devastated. This was made worse by Angus deciding that playing the game and getting to Twickenham was a bridge too far... and our goal threat was looking severely depleted.
Kav's team talk of we've only got 12 and 3 of us are injured had the knock on effect that whilst we had 80% of possession across the game we lacked any form of intensity.
Despite bossing the game from the outset we found ourselves 1-0 down the first time Welwyn attacked. Stu got isolated on the halfway line and found himself megged by their unconventional striker who with a number of passes on kept his composure to slot in at the near post.
Jack equalised just before half time, a ball fizzed into the D and squared by Kav for Jack to tap in.
Despite a team talk about raising intensity, we conspired to give away two soft short corners and softer goals in the first 2 minutes of the half to give ourselves a mountain to climb. Browny slotted home a lovely strike into the bottom corner with about 20 mins to go to give us some hope, but we failed to find the equaliser despite playing the last 20 mins camped in the Welwyn half.
MOM: Lance - the veteran left back looking our most attacking force.
DOD: Sully for the only comedy moment of the match where his "slide tackle" only succeeded in wiping out Lance.
